Higher education has deep roots in the North Country. SUNY Potsdam, the oldest higher education institution in the state system will celebrate it bi-centennial in 2015. Clarkson University also located in Potsdam was founded in the late 19th century as an engineering school that has evolved to become a Ph.d granting university and center for advanced materials research.
SUNY Potsdam is one of the cultural centers of Northern New York State and is home to the Crane School of Music one of the oldest music schools in the U.S. Operatic stars including Renee Fleming and Lisa Vrooman are graduates of the Crane School as are many of New York State’s music teachers.
